The NeuroCognitive & Behavioral Institute – What Makes Us Special

Established in 1998, The NeuroCognitive & Behavioral Institute (formerly The NeuroCognitive Institute) is committed to its scientist-practitioner model which requires its clinicians to remain actively involved in neuroscience research. Over the past three decades, NCBI has become one of the premiere centers in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Florida, Illinois, New Mexico, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, and Louisiana as well as nationally across the United States through NCBI’s virtual clinic, in the accurate diagnosis and treatment of cognitive and related neurobehavioral and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Our team consists of clinical neuropsychologists and cognitive neuroscientists, behavioral neurologists, clinical psychologists, neuropsychiatrists, cognitive and speech and language therapists as well as behaviorists, psychotherapists, neuromodulation and neurodiagnostic technicians.

We offer 5 centers of excellence in diagnostics and therapeutics. These include:

  1. The Neurodevelopmental Disorders Diagnostic and Treatment Center — This center makes available to patients and their families the latest neuroscience advances in neurodiagnostics and treatments for patients with: ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Communication Disorders, as well as, serving those with non-Autistic Intellectual and Learning Disabilities, such as Dyslexia.
  2. The Center for Acquired and Traumatic Brain Injuries — This center specializes on diagnosing and rehabilitating the cognitive, behavioral and neuropsychiatric disorders resulting from: Stroke and neurovascular disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Encephalopathies and Concussion
  3. The Mind-Body Neuropsychiatric and Mental Health Disorders Center — The clinical team members of this center specialize in studying and treating disorders related the interaction of genetics, stress and the resulting host of neuropsychiatric disorders that can result from these factors such as: Conversion disorders, Mood disorders, OCD, Tourette’s syndrome are among the more common disorders treated in this center. | Download the Psychiatric Assessments and Mental Health Treatments brochure for more details.

Clinical Services

Diagnostics & Treatments

Our pediatric team focuses on the accurate diagnosis which leads to effective treatments for patients suffering various neurodevelopmental, mood and behavioral disorders. We have individualized, half and full-day specialized and comprehensive treatment programs for patients with attention deficit disorder, learning disabilities and autistic spectrum disorders. Most of our treatments are non-drug based and include individual and group psychotherapy, behavioral management, including behavioral training for parents, social skills training, cognitive rehabilitation including various neuromodulation (NM) interventions such as neurofeedback and a variety of other non-invasive NM treatments such as tACS.

Similar to our pediatric track, our adolescent clinical team specializes in diagnosing and treating a variety of neurodevelopmental, behavioral and neuropsychiatric disorders in this age group. This includes comprehensive and individualized adolescent programs for patients with obsessive compulsive disorder, Tourette’s syndrome, mood disorders and behavioral programs such as those struggling to regulate emotions such as anger. Both individual and group based treatments are offered at NCBI for our adolescent patients.

Our adult and geriatric tracks also focus on accurately diagnosing mood disorders and treating cognitive impairment. One of our unique aspects is our ability to differentiate among the various neurodegenerative diseases that can cause cognitive deficits such as dementia. Our commitment to disease identification is critical for development effective treatments including exposing our patients to potentially disease modifying therapies within our clinical research division.

Over the past 20 years – we have learned how to get patients better. With the exception of some of the neurodegenerative dementia-producing diseases, we typically can improve cognitive functioning and reduce neuropsychiatric symptoms in the majority of the patients we serve. The average therapeutic gain is a 1.5 to 2 standard deviation improvement in functional outcome for the following disorders (based on meta-analytic data analysis from NCBI outpatient clinics from 2010-2021). This is a full 1.5 standard deviation improvement from treatment gains in comparison to 2010-2018)

Clinical Research

At The NeuroCognitive & Behavioral Institute, we want to ensure that all of our patients are aware of and have access to clinical trials as a possible treatment option.
We have a state-of-the clinical research unit at NCBI. Here, we study promising new diagnostic and treatment options with our patients and their family members. Our clinical research unit offers all the latest safety equipment, neurodiagnostics, including Artificial Intelligence driven diagnostics and a variety of treatment options including genetic manipulation, medications and medical device research.

In addition to our clinical neuroscientists, the CRU also staffs doctors and nurses trained in critical care and internal medicine. Our clinical research unit is an integral part of the comprehensive clinical services we offer to our patients with cognitive, neurobehavioral and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Find out more about our clinical trials and how you can volunteer for each clinical trial. The NeuroCognitive & Behavioral Institute and the NCBI Clinical Research Foundation, offer a variety of clinical trial study options.
